Technical Spec
All buildings are constructed from Redwood throughout. Many timber buildings are made of white pine; this tends to have dead knots, which are more likely to fall out. It is quite dry so has a tendency to split and crack with changes in weather; it is also a lot cheaper to buy!
At The Shed Co. we pride ourselves on the quality of our timber, we buy a high grade of Redwood and carefully select the pieces we use for our buildings. Redwood has a silky quality, contains a large amount of resin, which helps to prevent drying out and splitting or cracking. All wood contains a degree of knots but a live knot is less likely to fall out and leave a hole in your building.
Our standard framing is ex 38 x 50mm with a finished planed size of 34 x 44mm with two rounded edges on internal corners.
Our heavy-duty framing is planed to a finished size of 70 x 44mm. We use shiplap cladding for the walls; this is also a true tongue and groove board for effective weatherproofing. It is ex 16 x 125mm, profiled and smooth finished to 12mm thick.
For roofs and floors we use a close boarding, or matching tongue and groove boarding, this is also planed to a finished size of 12mm thick and 120mm wide.
All timber used is from sustainable and managed sources which can be traced through our suppliers.
Treatment. We always recommend that buildings are given an initial treatment before delivery, this gives a weather proof coating inside and out and also helps to prevent “blooming” if there is any condensation build up. We use a product called Protek, this contains wax additives and is water based. It can be painted over with the colour of your choice. We use a dip tank to coat the panels and soak treatment into joints.
Glass used in sheds is 3mm horticultural. Glass in summerhouses is 4mm clear float. Playhouses have UV stable acrylic for safety; this can also be used as an option in other buildings.
The majority of buildings are made using butt joints at framework intersections, these are double fixed with corrugated fasteners and then staples, and no fixings are visible inside the building.
For added strength uprights are spaced at a maximum 600mm centres. Floor joists are at 300mm centres maximum. Boards are fixed to framework using 32mm galvanised and pasivated ring shank nails to ensure both good holding properties and anti bleed. In buildings over a certain length 3 x 2 inch trusses are used to prevent the roof sagging and give strength to the structure.
Our standard roof covering is a mineral coated bitumous felt, we use a good quality medium duty felt. Other roofing options include, Heavy duty felt, felt shingles, onduline or polycarbonate sheeting.
Insulating and lining is very popular to get all year round use from your building. We use a polystyrene slab (25mm thick) for insulating, and 6mm thick MDF for a lining material, although wooden boarding is an option for the purist! It is a simple matter to install trunking for electrics at the time of insulating.
